There are some traditional breath prayers used by some in the church such as, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me,” based on Mark 10:47. Stephen Porges in “The Polyvagal Theory: New Insights into Adaptive Reactions of the Autonomic Nervous System,” in Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine 76, Suppl 2 (April 2009): S86–S90, and The Polyvagal Theory: Neurophysiological Foundations of Emotion, Attachment, Communication, and Self-Regulation, (New York, NY: W. God, help me through this day,” “Jesus, you’re so good to me” or “Spirit, guide me,” are phrases that I’m often breathing into prayer in the midst of my crazy day. What’s even more amazing about that is the way that I’m much more aware of what God is doing in my life and in those around me because I’m more conscious of His presence. Especially if I’m in a time of anxiety, it’ll calm those physical symptoms so I can then turn my mind to focus on the truth.

Breath prayers sometimes have distinct parts for the inhale and the exhale and correspond with specific parts of the prayer. If you’ve read the show, we’re so much about practical tools, taking biblical truth and wisdom and applying it in practical ways. Sometimes, the sympathetic nervous system will get riled up over something that isn’t a threat to us, and we’ll get anxious and worried. As a prayer of the heart, the exact words may change to reflect the longing of the one who prays, seeking a lived experience of God.
