About this deal

I haven't actually managed to bake any cakes from this book so far but i have read it from cover to cover. In addition to the easy tray bakes and family cakes there are some recipes to interest the seasoned baker such as battenberg cake, or my favorite brandy snaps that need to be rolled around a wooden spoon while still warm to achieve their tube-like form, ready for filling with cream! Recipes include the marble cake my mum would make when I was small and the coffee walnut gateau which was one of my grandma's favorites. I love that the directions are very easy to follow and the cakes are simple to make they can even be done by kids. Not forgetting recipes you can make with your kids from Happy Face Biscuits to Traffic Lights and Jammy Buns.

With walnuts, banana and carrot, this moist bake is topped with a vanilla cream cheese icing and adorned with walnut halves – a classic for a reason! If you miss Mary's wisdom and inspiration in The Great British Bake Off , or want a brand-new companion to Mary Berry's Baking Bible , this is the cookbook for you with over 200 easy recipes to make with confidence. My first cake from this book will be a simple chocolate sponge cake which i am making for my dad's birthday in a few days time. The recipes are lovely and we have enjoyed trying out quite a few of them, our favourite is still a classic though, chocolate cake! She has published more than seventy cookery books (her first being The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook in 1970) and hosted several television series for the BBC and Thames Television.

There are hints and tips at the start of the book to help with common mistakes, tips to get the best out of your ingredients and equipment. There are tray bakes, no-bake cakes, tea breads, scones, biscuits as well as such delights as praline meringue and mocha gateau.

Her instructions are clear, most recipes have photos (that was my one quibble - I would have liked all the recipes to have photos). Mary also shows how to scale the recipe up or down depending on the cake tin sizes you have at home. Turn into the tin, smooth the top and bake in the oven for an hour and a half or until the cake is golden brown and a skewer pierced in the centre comes out clean.Sheila - I have been Type 2 for a couple of years - just about know now the things that trigger a high blood sugar. I read some books at my mum's whilst caring for her over the summer but since coming home I realise that I didn't make a note of them, but mum has since read the contents of her bookcases out to me, which wasn't all that helpful as I wasn't expecting that so didn't have a pen with ink in it to begin making a note! There are tons of easy recipes for families to cook together if you like, and I loved the fact that she's given alternatives or additions to most of them. A bestseller of its time, many families are still baking with it now, but 37 years on, Mary Berry has completely revised and updated this much-loved book.
